“Modular construction is a process in which a building is constructed off-site, under controlled plant conditions, using the same materials and designing to the same codes and standards as conventionally built facilities – but in about half the time.” Modular construction is greener, faster, and smarter. “The factory-controlled process generates less waste, creates fewer site disturbances, allows for tighter construction, less material waste, and improved air quality. Construction of modular buildings occurs simultaneously with site work and eliminates weather delays allowing projects to be completed in half the time of traditional construction. Finally, the indoor construction environment allows for a reduction of accidents and related liabilities allowing for safer construction.”

An international resource serving the United States, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East with factories located in California, Pennsylvania, and Poland and offices located in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ireland.

VBC offers factory modular construction. With factory modular construction there aren’t any weather delays, the supply chain has been de-risked by partnering directly with commodity manufacturers, high end performance comes standard, energy use can be decreased by 50 percent through integration of advanced technologies allowing over $1,000 to be saved per unit annually, fewer materials are wasted, stolen, or damaged when stored in a factory, naturally increased efficiency and consistency through enhanced reliance on machinery, and VBC offers a productized approach to housing development with a standard catalog of units.

Philippe Block is a full professor of Architecture and Structures and head of the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) at ETH Zurich, where he co-leads the Block Research Group (BRG). He studied architecture and structural engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. The BRG develops sustainable and circular construction solutions through the advancement of computational structural design and innovation in digital fabrication and construction. Specific expertise includes computational form finding, discrete masonry, graphic statistics, architectural and structural geometry, digital fabrication and construction, and open-source computation.

In this podcast Philippe discusses what he considers to be the 3 pillars to sustainable construction – 1. strength through geometry, 2. material effectiveness, 3. circular construction. Under the first pillar, strength through geometry, Philippe talks about how knowing the natural structural form of different materials can reduce the amount of materials being used. In the second section, material effectiveness, Philippe discusses how by using materials how they naturally want to be used (compression v tensions, and shape) allows us to activate maximum efficiency and even activate low strength materials to contribute toward construction.  In the third section, circular construction, Philippe talks about the goal of reusing materials as much as possible but also designing buildings for the next lifetime as deconstruction causes the most emissions.
